In these posts I want to share some of my favorite pieces, which will include wall hangings, small works, pillows, purses, and just because pieces, enjoy!

Sweet Roses and Posies

I created this piece for my book, The Embroidery Book, by C&T Publishing. I used two different colors of Hoffman Batiks for the the strip-pieced base. I added in hand-dyed vintage cotton lace and dyed mother-of-pearl buttons for the details. The embroidery was first worked around the center square, with a row of stitches mirroring the square. Vignettes were worked into the center, and corners of the middle section. The embroidery was worked in Wildflower thread by the Caron Collection, and 6 colors of silk embroidery ribbon and silk floss.

Embroidery Stitches Used

  • Border row and vines: blanket stitch, feather stitch
  • Decorative stitches: lazy daisy stitch, ribbon stitch, padded straight stitch
  • Detail stitches: French knot stitch, lazy daisy stitch, fly stitch
  • Vignette stitches: woven rose stitch, woven rose stitch variation (two colors of ribbon), pointed petal stitch, rosette, French knot stitch

Day 24 of HEARTS!

Many of you know that I love hearts! I love the shapes and all of the possibilities. The base of this heart-shaped wall hanging is made from two cotton batik fabrics, strip pieced together with a v-shaped section in the middle of the heart. The embroidered flowers and leaves are worked in silk embroidery ribbon, silk floss, and buttonhole twist. Sequins, glass beads, buttons and flower shaped rondelles were added in for details. Rayon cord was couched around the outer edge. The stitches and example can be found The Embroidery Book.

Creative Thread Embroidery: class/tutorial

Creative Thread Embroidery: 3 lessons/$40.00

embroideryExplore the possibilities and broaden your creative stitched techniques to add to your CQ and other embroidery projects. We will work with a variety of embroidery threads such as pearl cotton; buttonhole twist; rayon and cotton floss. Some stitches will blend thread to create new colors and textures. The dimensional embroidery stitches that will be covered are bullion knot, cast on buttonhole, drizzle, woven, whipped and tatted. Traditional stitches such as the buttonhole, chain stitch, feather stitch, feather stitch leaf, French knot, lazy daisy, pistol stitch and straight stitch will be also covered.

Skill Level Intermediate: sewing machine and embroidery knowledge needed

Lesson 1: First you will prepare the base of your needle case, or if you choose you can work on a pre-pieced fabric base. Next we will talk about the threads, learn how to blend colors and what needles to use. The stitches that will be covered in this class are: whipped stitch rose, bullion knot rose, buttonhole rose, buttonhole wheel and tatted flowers.

Lesson 2: This class will focus on filling in your base with feather stitch vines and leaves; lazy daisy flowers and leaves; and drizzle stitch flowers and centers.

Lesson 3: This class will focus on the tiny extras like the woven star, pistol stitch, straight stitch and French knots. Directions will also be given to finish your needle case.

Class Information

These classes can be purchased at any time, there is no set schedule.The class can be ordered by contacting Christen: thestoreonthecorner@gmail.com. She will send you an invoice through PayPal.

Once the class is paid for, the supply list will be sent out. The lessons will begin one week after the purchase of the class, unless otherwise stated. You will receive an email with the lesson attached. The following lesson/s will arrive one week after the previous lesson.

A high speed internet connection is recommended, and you must have basic computer and internet skills. You will need to be able know how to download and save a document to your computer’s hard drive, open it and print out a copy.

Silk Petit 4 Pincushion: embroidery and ribbonwork

Silk Petit Four, was my entry for the PieceWork Magazine’s The Excellence in Needle Arts Awards—Pincushions 2008 contest. Click the link “View the 2008 Winners” below the pictures to read more.

It was selected to be on display with the “winning entries” at The National NeedleArts Association’s trade show in Columbus, Ohio, June 6-9, 2008 and at the Embroiderers’ Guild of America’s (EGA) newly opened museum in Louisville, Kentucky, from August 1 through November 30, 2008.

Ingredients used in pincushion are: silk fabric for the base, stuffing cardboard and felt; ribbons: grosgrain ribbon, Hanah Silk bias, striped grosgrain, Mokuba picot edged ombre variegated woven edged, and single sided satin; embroidery floss: buttonhole twist, DMC linen floss, Kreinik silk Mori, Caron Collection Wildflowers pearl cotton and Waterlilies silk floss; 4mm silk embroidery ribbon.
