Zembroodlery: class/tutorial

Zembroodlery: 3 lessons/$30.00

zembroodlery1This is a fun and creative class that uses felt, soutache trim and seed beads to create a colorful base that can be used as a wall hanging, or a pillow. It is an excellent class to learn about free form stitched bead embroidery using the shapes of the felt as a design element. The project in is all hand-sewn, with no sewing machine needed.

Skill Level – Beginning/Intermediate: some hand sewing needed; minimal beading knowledge needed.

Lesson 1: The base of the felt is first cut into shapes, which are reverse appliquéd with additional pieces and colors of felt. Soutache trim is then stitched to the appliquéd shapes.

Lesson 2: The beading begins! Several different bead embroidery stitches will be explored using size 6, 8 and 11seed beads. Sequins, buttons and larger beads will also be used.

Lesson 3: Additional rows of soutache trim are added to fill in the design. Then beads, buttons, and more are stitched in and around the new rows. Suggestions for finishing the base will also be given.

Scrumptious Scraps: class/tutorial

Scrumptious Scraps: 5 lessons/$60.00

dyed lace scrapsScrumptious bits and pieces of vintage laces are melded and stitched together on a base of silk fabric to form a unique and beautiful base for your creative stitched designs. Once the lace scraps are turned into a base, I will show you how to dye the base and a variety of RTD silk ribbons that can be later used in the embroidery and ribbon worked floral vignettes.

Skill Level Advanced: sewing machine, hand sewing, embroidery and ribbonwork knowledge needed.

Lesson 1: This lesson will cover the design of the collage with bits of lace and silk ribbon that will be stitched onto to a piece of silk for the base. This includes machine and hand stitched details. Only cotton, rayon or silk lace will work for the meld, you will need to know what you have before you start the project.

Lesson 2: In this class we will focus on dyeing the melded lace base as well as different techniques that can be used to prepare the ribbons for dyeing. The melded lace base and the RTD silk ribbons for the ribbon work flowers and the silk ribbon embroidery are dyed with the Colorhue dyes, (no other dye will be used or discussed).

Lesson 3: This class will focus on the ribbon worked (ribbon cut to a specific length and stitched with a needle and thread), flowers that will become the centerpieces for the floral vignettes. We will cover setting up the vignettes with added bits of dyed appliqués, ribbon scrunched sections, ribbon worked flowers such as the rosette, double edged rosette, berries, fuchsias, hearts, concertina rose, and the prairie lily.

Lesson 4: This class will focus on the silk ribbon embroidery (ribbon threaded through a needle and stitched through the fabric to form a flower or pattern) and traditional embroidered stitches (ribbon or thread stitched into patterns) that will be worked within and around the vignettes. The stitches that will be covered are the outline stitch, feather stitch, woven rose, Japanese ribbon stitch, lazy daisy stitch, bullion-tipped lazy daisy, couched thread tendrils, and the French knot.

Lesson 5: This class will focus on the extra embellishments that you can add onto your piece such as simple beaded centers, buttons, charms and trinkets. We will also discuss the finishing touches and details that can be added to your project.

A Crazy Lady’s Guide to Piecing: class/tutorial

A Crazy Lady’s Guide to Piecing: 3 lessons/ $38.00

crazy pieced blockCrazy piecing is definitely an accurate description for piecing disparate and awkward bits of this and that together. It can be confusing and confounding when you first start, in fact that is the first question people usually ask, how do I start? Questions that usually follow are what do I put where, what fabric do I use, what color should go next to what, and how on earth do I get myself out of that boxed in mess I created?

The class will cover three different basic CQ (Crazy Quilt) piecing techniques that I use to stitch a base for a garment, quilt, pillow or wall hanging. I will share with you my experience and my solutions to all of the above questions and more. I will give you ideas on how to choose your fabric, color scheme and how to stitch your base depending on the size of the scraps, strips, and bits of fabric that you have. I will also give you several ideas that I have used to get myself out of those boxed in messes!

Skill Level Beginning: sewing machine knowledge needed

Lesson CP/101: First I will discuss fabric choices: color, size and fabric content. We will also discuss additional items such as ribbon, lace, handkerchiefs, doilies, and sheer fabrics that can be used to create interest to the fabrics that you have chosen. This class will cover the Triangle and Strip crazy piecing technique. Fabric extras that will also be included are Prairie Points and Yo-yos.

Lesson CP/102: This class will cover the 4-square and Opposite Side crazy piecing technique. Technique extras will be foundation piecing for small pieces using a strip or fan shape.

Lesson CP/103: This class will cover the 5-corner cube and Walk around the Block crazy piecing technique. Technique extras will be the Boxed In Triangle, Half Dome and Wedge fold and stitch techniques.

The Castle Door

The Castle Door

The Castle Door

I thought of an image of an old castle door that had been weathered, with a big door knocker, a brass knob and big hinges. I searched Ebay and found this large old key that is used for the hanger here; I also found a few old skeleton keys to add in here and there with my newer keys and heart shaped locks. The base is machine pieced and machine quilted. The  charms, keys and buttons are attached with embroidery floss.

Lothlorien Twilight

Lothlorien Twighlight

Lothlorien Twilight

“Lothlorien” is where Galadriel lives in J.R.R. Tolkien’s magical world. The cloaks that she and her ladies made, that were given to the “Fellowship of the Ring” were said to have been made with a cloth that reflected the leaf, branch, water and stone of this realm. I felt that the colors that I chose for this piece reflected the same thing. Hopefully the magic will be reflected here too!

The background is a vintage embroidered silk purse, probably from China. The purse itself was too delicate to be used as such, so I have tried to preserve it’s beauty, and add it to my collection of art. Each piece of embroidery is comprised of single “Peking or Chinese Knot”, incredible in itself the work that went into each piece! These were each stitched separately then attached by hand to the brown silk. The rows of gold work that attached each design had come apart so I hand stitched these back in place first before I added in my own embellishments.

Then it was time to add in some of my own work. I beaded three dragonflies that have a dentalium shell body that is beaded and wings that are beaded. I made several sets of brick stitched leaves and interspersed them through the sections of flowers. I also beaded a few vines of brick stitched leaves.

I hand stitched several butterflies from French wire ribbon, and added dentalium shell bodies which are beaded. I also made hand stitched flowers from grosgrain ribbon that I stitched with vintage celluloid button centers. I antiqued both the flowers and butterfly bodies with copper fabric paint.

Several more flowers were made from silk bias ribbon and vintage velvet ribbon. These have beaded centers and are interspersed between the butterflies and larger flowers.

I used many vintage buttons that I have collected over the years including carved Tahiti shell, “tinnies” and celluloid which were used around the outer edges. Several new dragonfly and butterfly buttons and charms were also found to complete the theme.

I had a wonderful time collecting all of these treasures, then finding a home for them to reside.

The last item I found at Maureen’s Vintage Acquisitions was the mini quilt hanger with the dragonfly on the top! Perfection!

I hope that you enjoy what you do, have fun today and do take a look at the other entries for this challenge, they are all unique and incredible!

Happy stitching, collecting and treasure what gifts you have! Enjoy! ~Christen

Scrumptious Scraps Wall Hanging: silk ribbon embroidery with silk ribbon worked flowers and leaves

Scrumptious Scraps by Christen Brown

Scrumptious Scraps by Christen Brown

This wall hanging truly covers all of my passions, embroidery, ribbon work, vintage lace, and dyeing! Scrumptious Scraps was a labor intensive project, but well worth the time that I spent on it. In fact this piece is one of my favorites, and I have used it throughout the design of my website.

The base fabric is comprised of all of those precious scraps of handmade lace and fabric that you can’t throw out! The base was created with a layer of Solvy over the scraps of lace and fabric which was then machine quilted fusing all of the pieces together. The base was then dyed with Color Hue Dyes, along with the ribbons that I used to embroider the flowers and leaves.

The ribbon worked flowers are made from Hanah silk bias ribbons, cotton grosgrain ribbons, and dyed silk satin ribbons; the embroidery was stitched with silk ribbons and embroidery threads.
