spring tea dressHere is Lizbeth’s dress for March, it is her Spring Tea dress. Please join the rest of the Dress Up group over at Alice and Camilla’s for their March productions!

close-up view of the ribbon workded flowersThe ladies that live in Lizbeth’s apartment building get together once a year and host a fundraiser for the local public gardens. Lizbeth loves to walk by the gardens on her way to work or for a weekend stroll, as do all of the other ladies that live around her.

Each has her own favorite, for instance Constance loves the roses, and Deborah loves the lily section, but Lizbeth is particularly fond of the pansy and petunia display. ribbon reticule

Lizbeth made her dress from vintage lace and vintage and new ribbon worked flowers. She dyed the lace and some of the ribbons for her gown.

She had seen a new shop in the village that had extraordinary accessories and thought she might find a purse to match her gown. She found the sweet little reticule on display with the parasol and the magnificent chapeau. Well there was no turning back when she saw the set displayed together. When she tried on the hat she felt a little bit like Eliza Doolittle on her way to the races, but she didn’t think that she would have a chance to say “Come on Dover, move your bloomin’ arse”!

She is a girl after my own heart, bold and beautiful, and she is definitely no shrinking violet!

Dress-UP February

mixed mediaThis is Lizbeth’s dress for Dress Up February over at Alice and Camilla.

Lizbeth had longed to wear the pink chiffon and red taffeta dress that her mother had worn when she was young. Her mother talked about the elegant balls that she attended with many handsome admirers waiting to take her for a spin on the dance floor. She promised Lizabeth that this too would happen to her someday.

But alas dating and men are quite different today than they were when her mother was young, Still Lizabeth was a dreamer, and hoped that her dream boat or at least a man who liked to dance would come her way. Lizbeth had been pleasantly surprised when Roger, the man she met on-line asked her out to the annual Sweethearts Dance. Yeah she was going to get to wear her mother’s dress!

When Roger arrived to take her to the dance, three things were quite clear: the first thing was that he wasn’t altogether truthful about his height;  two he had clearly used the photo of someone else (she didn’t remember all of those stripes); and thirdly she was never going to fit on the bicycle that he had ridden over on!

Being a quick thinker and a modern gal, she hailed a cab, asked him to park his bike, and pulled off a few flowers from her gown for his hat. Then she promised herself that she was going to dance as many dances as she could, with or without Roger!

Let’s Play Dress-Up: January Outfit

art doll

Lizbeth

I am joining a group for a year, we are playing Dress Up. Our challenge is to make a dress a month (mine is a little late for January), and to create a wardrobe for the clothes.

I decided to make a doll for the finished clothes, her name is Lizbeth. I named her after a girl that I met in design school, we became fast friends. I will tell you more about her in the months to come.

January Dress-UP

Here is her outfit for January. I layered vintage lace over a base of a ripped hanky and lace. I stitched this collage down by hand and machine. Her bonnet is made from a crochet flower with added silk ribbon trim. Her boots are made from muslin. All of these pieces fit on to her body with wire and ribbon.

Here is her body, I just quickly put it together, using a mannequin shape for her frame.

Her arms and legs are made from wire, which I wrapped with silk ribbon. Her body is made from muslin. Her face is hand painted and detailed with ink pens.

Her wardrobe (shown above in the first picture) will be decorated in the months to come.
