Next stop on the blog turn is ME!

Here is my new book, Beaded Embroidery Stitching, which includes 125 bead embroidery and bead woven stitches, using beads, buttons, charms and more. Once you practice the basic stitches, there are 8+projects for you to work your magic on!

I have included a section on the types of beads and embellishments that you will be using for the stitches, and the other items that can be included in your creations.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Many of the stitches included in the book are interpreted from traditional thread embroidery stitches.

I have included a look into my Design Process, and how a project will start.

I have included several versions of a design in different color ways so that the reader could see the possibilities.

Day 22 of HEARTS!

Many of you know that I love hearts! I love the shapes and all of the possibilities. This heart-shaped etui is another example of my class Log Cabin Heart Etui and Pincushion. It was featured as a gallery example in The Embroidery Book.

Day 6 of HEARTS!

Many of you know that I love hearts! I love the shapes and all of the possibilities. These fun sewing aids are from my class Log Cabin Etui and Pincushion. The set includes directions for piecing a log cabin base for an etui (needle holder) and pincushion. The pincushion has a heart shaped top, and both have heart shaped buttons. The embroidery stitches include: chain, herringbone, zigzag chain, blanket and short-long-short blanket, fly, lazy daisy, closed buttonhole flower, curved open chain loop, and the French Knot stitches.

The class is a 16 week course where we explore a stitch and it’s variations, or several related stitches each week. I use my book Embroidered and Embellished as a reference guide.

Perky Pincushion

perky pincushionThis petite pincushion is the perfect size for your travel sewing kit. The base of the pincushion, the flowers and the leaves are made from grosgrain ribbon. A scissor fob can be made using the same flower and leaf that adorns the pincushion.

New Pincushions to Share

I have a passion for sewing accessories, as you may have guessed. And I have some new pincushions to share with you, these were gallery samples from my new book, Ribbonwork Flowers, which is available March, 2015.ribbonwork pincushion“Winifred’s Pincushion” started with a porcelain doll head that was made in Germany during the 1890’s. The body of the pincushion is made from 3-1/2″ hand dyed silk velvet fabric. The base is embellished with velvet grosgrain ribbon and ruched 3/8″ satin ribbon. The flowers and leaves include: Rosettes made from 1/4″ ombre taffeta ribbon; English Miss roses made from 5/8″ silk bias ribbon; Puck’s Rose made from 3/8″ double sided satin ribbon; and Oval Leaves made from 1″ silk bias ribbon. The dimensions are: 3-3/4″ diameter X 3-1/4″ high.

impatienspincushion“Tuffet of Impatiens” is 2″ in diameter, and stand 2″ high. The base of the pincushion is made from 2-1/2″ silk bias ribbon, and is embellished with 1/4″ ombre taffeta ribbon. The Impatiens are made from 1″ silk bias ribbon, and the leaves are made from hand dyed silk satin ribbon.

pincushionforconstanceThe base for “A Pincushion for Constance” is made from hand dyed vintage silk velvet ribbon with a picot edge trim. The base of the flower is a crochet doily that I found at a thrift store. The flowers and leaves include: English Miss roses made from 1-1/2″ silk bias ribbon; Gather and Grab flower made from 5/8″ silk bias ribbon; and Oval Leaves made from 1-1/2″ silk bias ribbon. The dimensions are: 4″ diameter x 2-1/4″ high.

strawberryLastly I want to share one of my favorite sets, “Strawberry Scissor Fob and Red Rosettes Pincushion”. The base for the pincushion is a 1-1/2″ rayon velvet ribbon; the base for the fob is a 5/8″ rayon velvet ribbon. The pincushion is adorned with 3/8″ jacquard ribbon Rosettes with ombre taffeta Soft Curve Leaves. The strawberries are made from 7/8″ satin ribbon with 3/8″ ruched calyx.

Log Cabin Heart Etui and Pincushion: class/tutorial

Log Cabin Heart Etui and Pincushion: 3 lessons/$30.00

pinchushionandetui1This is a very traditional project, with a contemporary flare. The heart shaped etui and base of the pincushion are both pieced with a version of the Log Cabin technique. The pieced sections are embellished with traditional embroidery stitches using two different types of thread, perle cotton #8 and 6-ply stranded floss. These make an excellent gift for any sewer!

Skill Level Intermediate: sewing machine and some embroidery knowledge needed

Lesson 1: In this class you will be piecing the base for both the etui and pincushion using a variation of the Log Cabin piecing technique. You will also form the decorative center of the pincushion.

Lesson 2: In this class you will embroider the base stitches across the seams, these include: chain, herringbone, zigzag chain, blanket and short-long-short blanket stitch. Next you embroider the decorative stitches to the base stitches, these include: fly, lazy daisy, closed buttonhole flower, curved open chain loop, and the French Knot. You will also embroider the center of the pincushion.

Lesson 3: In this class you will assemble all of the pieces and parts of the etui and pincushion.

Creative Thread Embroidery: class/tutorial

Creative Thread Embroidery: 3 lessons/$40.00

embroideryExplore the possibilities and broaden your creative stitched techniques to add to your CQ and other embroidery projects. We will work with a variety of embroidery threads such as pearl cotton; buttonhole twist; rayon and cotton floss. Some stitches will blend thread to create new colors and textures. The dimensional embroidery stitches that will be covered are bullion knot, cast on buttonhole, drizzle, woven, whipped and tatted. Traditional stitches such as the buttonhole, chain stitch, feather stitch, feather stitch leaf, French knot, lazy daisy, pistol stitch and straight stitch will be also covered.

Skill Level Intermediate: sewing machine and embroidery knowledge needed

Lesson 1: First you will prepare the base of your needle case, or if you choose you can work on a pre-pieced fabric base. Next we will talk about the threads, learn how to blend colors and what needles to use. The stitches that will be covered in this class are: whipped stitch rose, bullion knot rose, buttonhole rose, buttonhole wheel and tatted flowers.

Lesson 2: This class will focus on filling in your base with feather stitch vines and leaves; lazy daisy flowers and leaves; and drizzle stitch flowers and centers.

Lesson 3: This class will focus on the tiny extras like the woven star, pistol stitch, straight stitch and French knots. Directions will also be given to finish your needle case.

Renaissance of Ribbon Embroidery

I love to embroider, I was taught by my mom at the age of seven. I am happiest with a needle in my hand, and a few skeins of floss or pearl cotton.

This swatch is from the very first project that I used silk ribbon for embroidery, and I found that I love this equally as well. Though I must say after the cost of this first project we could no longer afford to send our daughter to college! (But she looks fabulous wearing this!)

The vest I made was for a silk ribbon embroidery class that I have taught for many years. I am happy to say that my mom was one of my first students! It was wonderful to give her something to enjoy as much as I enjoy all of the techniques that she has taught me through the years.

One of the venues that I taught at was the American Quilter’s Society in Padukah, Kentucky. As a gift, (and so I looked put together for my class), my mom had made me an etui, scissor holder, and pin cushion that she had embroidered. She stitched the embroidery in my favorite colors, and I cherish this set.

The class did go well, I had 25 students, and each one left with new found skills, a love for silk ribbon and happy (thankfully!).
