Ellen Matilda was my father's mother and my grandmother. She immigrated from Sweden with my grandfather, and they raised eight children in Burbank, CA. There was never a lot of extra money, and she longed for a rose garden that she never had the time for. My aunt, her youngest daughter also loved roses, and she maintained a garden that her mother would have been proud of.
The pattern Ellen Matilda's Rose Garden here is a cotton velveteen fabric. the base stitch maidenhair fern is embroidered with a variegated pearl cotton thread. The tips are embroidered with the lazy daisy and bullion-tipped lazy daisy stitch. Spider web roses, and ribbon rosettes are stitched down the middle vine. French knots and bullion knots were also used.
A vintage button for the closure; glass seed beads and glass leaf details; brass butterflies; and vintage glass beads on the handle add the perfect finishing touches.
