Strawberry Fields Mask

This was my entry to a show entitled Behind the Mask sponsored by The Beadin' Path in Freeport, MN. They "issued a challenge to beadwork and fiber artists from all over the world: to accept, be inspired by and submit a mask", and over 50 artists responded. Each artiest started with the same white paper mâche mask. I think that the variety of designs were incredible!

I covered my mask with quilted fabric, ruched ribbons and rows of rickrack ribbon. These areas were used for rows and sections of buttons, beads and ribbon flowers to be stitched to. Additional beading was added by free form peyote and bead embroidery stitches.

I had been collecting the strawberry and other fruit-themed buttons and beads for various other projects, and thought that their true home would be on this mask. Many of these buttons are made from vintage celluloid and Bakelite. The beads include many glass flowers, lemons, strawberry and other novelty shapes; vintage sew through nail heads; seed beads in sizes 6, 8, 11 and 15.
