Renaissance of Ribbon Embroidery Vest

close up view of silk ribbon embroidery

Close up view of ribbon and fabric flowers and leaves embellished with silk ribbon embroidery and bead embellishment.

Vest- February 1992
Line: Vest
Techniques: Traditional freeform and silk ribbon embroidery; bead and button embellishment
Fabrics: Tapestry, cotton lining.

This vest is the first piece of wearable art that I embroidered with silk ribbon. I included tiny tatted flowers, ribbon work flowers and leaves, small gold appliques and beads.

The main focal "vignette" is the same, with the ribbon colors and combinations varying slightly. The stitches include the woven rose, lazy daisy, plume stitch, bud stitch, French knots, colonial knots, feather stitch and the couch stitch.

For the embroidery stitches I used 4mm silk ribbon, buttonhole twist, Japan gold #5, and sewing thread. The tatted flowers are made from cotton thread. The ribbon worked flowers and leaves are made from 3/8" satin ribbon.

I included fresh water pearls and semi precious beads for the embellishment. This is the sample for the class Renaissance of Ribbon Embroidery.
