Enchanted April Short Sleeved Jacket

silk ribbon embroidery

Close up view of ribbon and fabric flowers and leaves embellished with silk ribbon embroidery, button and bead embellishment.

Date Created: April 1997
Line: Short sleeved jacket, skirt
Techniques: Machine crazy piecing and stitching: hand worked ribbon flowers and leaves, silk ribbon embroidery, bead and button embellishment
Fabrics: Vintage silk, stitched cotton from India, vintage and new cottons

I love the colors that come from spring flowers, and the film that this jacket is named for. The pinks, purples and periwinkles are some of my favorite colors.

The jacket pattern was cut into sections, which were individually crazy pieced and reassembled onto batting with satin ribbon covering the raw edges. Ribbon worked flowers and leaves made of Hanah silk bias ribbon and satin ribbons were stitched into small vignettes. These sections were embroidered with silk ribbon and traditional embroidery stitches.

Vintage and new glass beads and buttons are used to enhance the floral design. The jacket is pictured with a tiered skirt made from two vintage cotton tablecloths that were heavily embroidered.

The jewelry ensemble worn with this outfit is Periwinkles and Heliotrope.
