Daisy's Gatsby Days- vest

silk ribbon embroidery

Close up view of silk ribbon embroidery and bead embellishment.

Date Created: June 1996
Line: Vest and purse
Techniques: Ribbon worked flowers, silk ribbon embroidery, bead embellishment
Fabrics: Woven upholstery, vintage and new ribbons and lace, silk ribbon, fresh water pearls, vintage and new glass beads

The colors of the tapestry reminded me of Daisy Buchanan's cousin Nick Caraway's house that fateful summer day for her long awaited reunion with Jay Gatsby. The little cottage filled with white roses in silver vases, and the dreamy filmy quality of the rain, and the gauze curtains blowing in the breeze. This vest is an example of some of the techniques that are taught in my Renaissance of Ribbon Embroidery class.

The ribbon work and silk ribbon embroidery was stitched following the pattern of the tapestry fabric. 2mm, 4mm and 7mm new and vintage ribbons were used in the embroidery along with silk button hole twist and hand dyed Wildflower threads.

The collar is stitched with a vintage tatted lace, and embellished with ribbon worked flowers. New and vintage glass beads, fresh water pearls, metal charms and glass buttons were added to the ribbon worked designs.

The jewelry ensemble worn with this vest is Cornwall in the Springtime.
